High-quality metadata is vital for increasing the visibility and impact of your work, ensuring that researchers can find and access your article. When preparing your submission, consider how you search for articles – this perspective can help you optimise your metadata. Below are the key elements required for a successful submission to our journals.
1. Title of the Article
- Clearly describe the main result or focus of your research.
- Be concise and aim for a title of no more than 100 characters.
- Avoid using acronyms or overly technical jargon.
- Ensure the title aligns with the journal’s specific formatting guidelines.
2. Author(s)
Consistency in author names is crucial for ensuring accurate attribution and enables researchers to locate other articles you have authored.
3. Affiliation
- Include the name of your university or institution, as well as the city and country.
- Properly listed affiliations help academic libraries support publications authored by their faculty.
4. ORCID iD
Registering for an ORCID iD is quick and provides a unique digital identifier for authors. ORCID ensures that your work is correctly attributed and linked across disciplines and time, avoiding confusion caused by similar names. Register for your ORCID iD here.
5. Author Email(s)
Provide a valid email address to receive notifications about the publication status of your article and to facilitate communication during the copyediting process.
6. Abstract
The abstract should succinctly summarise your research in 150–250 words. It should give readers a clear understanding of your paper’s focus and help them decide whether to read the full article. The abstract must be distinct from the first paragraph of the article. Search engines and bibliographic databases use the abstract, along with the title, for indexing. Therefore, include key terms to enhance discoverability.
7. Keywords
Include up to 10 keywords or phrases that reflect the main topics of your article. Consider terms researchers might use when searching for articles and how your work relates to broader themes, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (e.g., #SDG, #SDG5 for gender-related topics). Ensure your keywords complement your title and abstract for maximum visibility.
8. Article Type
Specify the type of article: e.g., Research Article, Book Review, or Other.
Providing comprehensive and accurate metadata ensures your article reaches the right audience and maximises its academic impact. Take care to review these elements before submission to help your research gain the visibility it deserves.
